Samaritans were the inhabitants of Samaria in Jesus' day, a population 2 Kings traces to a mixture of surviving Israelites and foreign settlers brought in after Assyria deported the northern kingdom. They worshiped at a temple on Mount Gerizim rather than Jerusalem and were generally despised by Jews of the period, which gives Jesus' parable of the good Samaritan and his conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well their sharp edge. Archaeological excavation on Mount Gerizim has confirmed the remains of the Samaritan temple the Jewish historian Josephus describes, and a small Samaritan community still exists in Israel and the West Bank today.
