Seir most often refers to the rugged mountain range east of the Arabah, stretching from the southern end of the Dead Sea toward the Gulf of Aqabah, originally home to the Horites before the descendants of Esau displaced them and made it the heartland of Edom. The name also belonged to one of the Horite chiefs listed in Genesis, and separately to a lesser known ridge in the territory of Judah, distinct from the Edomite range. Its terrain of narrow valleys and red sandstone cliffs shaped Edom's reputation for natural defenses.
