Shamgar, son of Anath, delivered Israel from a Philistine incursion by killing six hundred men with an ox goad, a long, sharp-tipped pole used for driving cattle (Judges 3:31). He is remembered again in the Song of Deborah as a figure from a dangerous era when travel on the main roads had become unsafe (Judges 5:6).
