Shittim was a plain in Moab east of the Jordan, opposite Jericho, where Israel made its final camp before crossing into Canaan; there the Israelite men were seduced into idolatry and immorality with Moabite women in the incident of Baal-peor (Numbers 25:1-3), and it was from this camp that Joshua sent the two spies into Jericho (Joshua 2:1). The prophets later look back to Shittim either as a byword for that sin (Micah 6:5) or, in Joel's vision of restoration, as the source of a life-giving stream flowing from the temple (Joel 3:18).
