Shobach commanded the army of Hadadezer, king of Zobah, mustering forces from beyond the Euphrates to fight alongside the Ammonites against David. He was defeated and killed by Joab's forces at Helam, a loss that led the Arameans allied with the Ammonites to make peace with Israel (2 Samuel 10:15-19); he is called Shophach in the parallel account (1 Chronicles 19:16).
