Who this is

Shophach, also spelled Shobach in the parallel account, was the general commanding the army of Hadadezer, the Aramean king of Zobah, when Ammon hired Aramean mercenaries against David; Joab's forces defeated the coalition and killed Shophach in battle (1 Chronicles 19:16-18; compare 2 Samuel 10:16-18). His death broke Aramean support for Ammon and led several vassal kings to make peace with David. The battle marks the high point of David's wars establishing Israelite dominance over the Aramean states to the north.
