Sidon was the older of the two great Phoenician port cities, north of Tyre, and its name is used in some Old Testament passages for Phoenician trade and craftsmanship generally. It was allotted to Asher but never conquered, and it remained an independent trading power through most of the biblical period. Jesus withdrew to its region at least once, and Paul's ship touched there under Julius the centurion's custody on the voyage to Rome. A sarcophagus of Sidon's king Eshmunazar II, inscribed with a long Phoenician royal text, is one of the best preserved records of the city's own royal history.
