Who this is

Silas was a leading member of the Jerusalem church chosen to accompany Paul on his second missionary journey after Paul and Barnabas split up, and he is likely the same person Paul calls Silvanus in his letters. He was imprisoned with Paul at Philippi, where the two of them sang hymns at midnight before an earthquake shook the prison doors open, and the jailer and his household were converted as a result. Silas later worked with Peter as well, helping deliver Peter's first letter to churches in Asia Minor.
