Sinai, also called Horeb, is the mountain where Israel camped for about a year after the exodus and received the law through Moses, its base in the plain of er-Rahah able to hold the whole camp in view of the summit. Tradition since at least the fourth century AD has identified it with Jebel Musa in the southern Sinai peninsula, where the monastery of Saint Catherine now stands, though other locations both within the peninsula and in Arabia have been proposed and the identification cannot be settled with certainty. It was there that Israel entered into covenant as a nation and received instructions for the tabernacle before resuming its journey toward Canaan.
