Sinim appears once, in Isaiah 49:12, as a distant land from which God promises to gather his scattered people, named there alongside the north and the west. Older interpreters, working only from the traditional Hebrew text, guessed this referred to China, but the great Isaiah scroll found among the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran reads "Syene" at this point instead, the ancient name for Aswan in southern Egypt, a reading most modern scholars now consider more likely both textually and geographically.
