The ruler of the synagogue in Corinth, seized and beaten in front of the judgment seat after Gallio threw out the case against Paul.
Sosthenes was the ruler of the synagogue in Corinth who was seized and beaten in front of the Roman proconsul Gallio's judgment seat after the Jewish community's case against Paul was dismissed (Acts 18:12-17). Paul later names a Sosthenes as a co-sender of 1 Corinthians, calling him “our brother” (1 Corinthians 1:1), and tradition has long identified him with the same man, now a Christian, though the text does not confirm it.
