Sychem (Shechem)

Stephen's Greek spelling of Shechem, in the speech he gave before the Sanhedrin. He says the patriarchs were buried in a tomb Abraham bought there from the sons of Hamor, though Genesis records two separate purchases, Machpelah at Hebron and Jacob's land at Shechem.

Who this is

Sychem is the Greek form of Shechem, used in Stephen's speech before the Sanhedrin when he recounts that the patriarchs were buried in a tomb Abraham had bought there from the sons of Hamor (Acts 7:16). The Genesis narrative actually records two separate transactions, Abraham's purchase of the cave of Machpelah at Hebron from Ephron the Hittite and Jacob's later purchase of land at Shechem from the sons of Hamor, and Stephen's speech appears to compress the two; Shechem itself, modern Tell Balata, has been extensively excavated and shows a fortified Bronze Age city consistent with the biblical setting.
