Who this is

Syene was Egypt's southern frontier town, paired with Migdol in the north as the two ends of the land in Ezekiel's oracles against Egypt (Ezekiel 29:10; 30:6). It sits at modern Aswan, opposite the island of Elephantine at the Nile's first cataract, a strategic gateway between Egypt and Nubia that also gave its name to the region's famous red granite, syenite. Thousands of Aramaic papyri recovered from Elephantine document a Jewish military garrison stationed there in the fifth century BC, evidence of a long-standing Judean presence at this same frontier post.
