Tahpanhes was a fortified Egyptian city near the eastern edge of the Nile delta where a group of Jewish refugees fled after the assassination of Gedaliah, taking the prophet Jeremiah with them against his counsel. Jeremiah prophesied there that Nebuchadnezzar would set his throne over buried stones at the entrance of Pharaoh's palace, a scene of judgment on Egypt. Archaeologist Flinders Petrie excavated the site, identified as Tell Defenneh, and uncovered a brick platform at a palace entrance that he proposed matched the setting of Jeremiah's prophecy.
