Tartan was not a personal name but an Assyrian military title meaning roughly "commander-in-chief." One tartan served as one of Sennacherib's envoys sent to demand Jerusalem's surrender under Hezekiah (2 Kings 18:17). An earlier tartan led Sargon II's campaign against Ashdod, an operation Sargon's own palace inscriptions at Khorsabad independently record (Isaiah 20:1).
