Tekoa was a fortified hill town in Judah about six miles south of Bethlehem, overlooking the wilderness that bears its name, strengthened by Rehoboam among his defensive cities (2 Chronicles 11:6). Joab used a "wise woman of Tekoa" to persuade David to bring Absalom back from exile (2 Samuel 14:2), and the shepherd Amos, "among the herdmen of Tekoa," was called from there to prophesy against Israel (Amos 1:1).
