A settlement of Judean exiles beside the river Chebar in Babylonia, where the prophet Ezekiel lived among his fellow captives (Ezek. 3:15). The name comes from an Akkadian phrase for an ancient ruin-mound; the founders of modern Tel Aviv borrowed it in 1910 for its Hebrew sense of a mound of spring, joining old ruin and new growth in one name.
