Theudas

Gamaliel's example of a movement that died with its leader. Theudas raised a following, he was killed, and it came to nothing. Josephus mentions a rebel Theudas around AD 44, later than Gamaliel's speech, and whether that is the same man has never been settled.

Who this is

Theudas led a failed uprising against Roman rule, cited by the Pharisee Gamaliel as an example of a movement that collapsed once its leader was killed (Acts 5:36). The Jewish historian Josephus describes a rebel named Theudas active around AD 44, a decade or more after Gamaliel's speech, and scholars have long debated whether this is the same man, a different Theudas, or evidence of a common revolutionary name in the period.
