Titus was a Gentile convert and close associate of Paul, entrusted with some of Paul's most sensitive assignments, including carrying a stern letter to the fractious church at Corinth and reporting back on how it was received. Paul later left Titus in Crete to organize the churches there and appoint elders, and the New Testament letter of Titus preserves Paul's instructions for that task. Paul held Titus up as proof that Gentile believers did not need to be circumcised to be fully accepted, refusing to have Titus circumcised even under pressure from other Jewish Christians.
