Tob
Jephthah's half-brothers drove him out for being a prostitute's son, and he went to the land of Tob, east of Gilead. He gathered outlaws there until Gilead's elders came to fetch him back to fight the Ammonites. Men of Tob later hired themselves out to the Ammonites.

The land of Tob lay somewhere east of Gilead, toward the Syrian desert, and became a refuge for Jephthah after his half brothers drove him from home for being the son of a prostitute (Judges 11:1-3). He gathered a band of outlaws there until the elders of Gilead, desperate for a military leader against the Ammonites, came to recruit him back (Judges 11:4-11). Men of Tob later appear as mercenaries hired by the Ammonites against David (2 Samuel 10:6, 8, where they are called "Ish-tob," meaning "the men of Tob").
