Ur was a major Sumerian city near the mouth of the Euphrates in southern Mesopotamia, the ancestral home from which Abraham's father Terah set out for Canaan (Genesis 11:28, 31; Nehemiah 9:7). British archaeologist Leonard Woolley's excavations there in the 1920s and 1930s uncovered a royal cemetery of some 2,000 burials from the mid-third millennium BC, filled with gold jewelry and the famous inlaid "Standard of Ur," giving a vivid picture of the wealthy Sumerian civilization Abraham's family left behind.
