A rich chief tax collector at Jericho, too short to see over the crowd, so he climbed a sycamore tree. Jesus called him down and invited himself to his house. Zacchaeus promised half his money to the poor.
Zacchaeus was a wealthy chief tax collector in Jericho, a job that made him wealthy by overcharging his fellow Jews on behalf of Rome and made him widely hated for it, and he was too short to see Jesus over the crowd so he climbed a sycamore tree to get a look. Jesus spotted him and invited himself to Zacchaeus's house, scandalizing the crowd, and Zacchaeus responded by pledging to give half his wealth to the poor and repay four times what he had defrauded from anyone.
