First, in plain English

In Luke

Luke's Zechariah here (11:51, 'killed between the altar and the house of God') is almost certainly the priest murdered in 2 Chronicles 24:20-22, centuries before Jesus spoke, not the same person as John the Baptist's father, who shares the name earlier in this Gospel. Josephus, decades after the Gospel was written, records a startlingly similar killing: a different man, also named Zacharias, cut down 'in the middle of the temple' during the Jewish War of AD 66-70. Two different men, two different centuries, the same name and the same terrible detail, not the same event, but a real and well-known coincidence scholars still discuss.
