When he saw his glory. Some manuscripts read when, others read because.

John 12:41

John 12:41, in every translation this tool compares.

First, in plain English

He said this when he saw it. He said this because he saw it. One conjunction, two different sentences.

Why this verse

Because the verse identifies whose glory Isaiah saw, and a one-word variant changes it from a statement about timing to a statement about cause.

How the others read it

The King James reads when. Most modern versions read because.

The word

ὅτε hote / ὅτι hoti

What you are seeing

Hote, when, appears in the later majority; hoti, because, in P66, P75, Sinaiticus and Vaticanus. The two words differ by one letter. Either way the verse says Isaiah saw his glory and spoke of him, which is a striking identification of the figure in Isaiah 6.

Why translators split

Not a translation question. The conjunction printed follows the Greek text chosen.

The rule to carry away

Single-letter variants between common conjunctions are among the most frequent in the manuscripts, and they change sentences more than their size suggests.

Choosing between them

Because is how most modern versions render it; when is the King James.
