Deuteronomy 4:19-20

Deuteronomy 4:19-20, in every translation this tool compares.

First, in plain English

The real question: if God really handed the sky-powers to the other nations, why is it wrong for Israel to worship them too? A parent gives each kid their own chore and their own allowance: one kid can't then claim a sibling's allowance too, even though the money is just as real either way. What was handed to someone else stays off limits to you, precisely because it was never yours to begin with. This card reads the sky-powers as real, delegated rulers over the nations, not just stars.

The problem

God is said to have assigned the host of heaven to the nations, and then forbids Israel the same thing. An assignment is not a prohibition, so what was given to them.

What this reading resolves

Delegated authority over the nations makes the sentence read straight. What Israel may not do is worship what the others were placed under.

What it still does not

Nothing here explains why God would make such an arrangement, and Deuteronomy does not say.

What the alternatives leave open

Readings that treat the host of heaven as mere astronomy have to explain in what sense stars were allotted to peoples as an act of God rather than simply existing over everyone.
