Ephesians 6:10-12
The struggle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, and cosmic powers.
Ephesians 6:10-12, in every translation this tool compares.
The real question: what is this list of “rulers, authorities, cosmic powers” actually naming, and why does the writer never stop to explain any of it? A memo that says “route this past Legal, Compliance, and the Regional Director” assumes you already know the org chart: the writer isn't inventing categories, just naming positions everyone in the building already recognizes. This list works the same way: ordinary vocabulary to the writer, foreign to us. This card reads it as a real chain of command that rebelled, not rhetorical flourish.
Paul names four categories of hostile authority and places them in the heavenly realms, as though the reader already knows the org chart.
A structure of delegated rule that rebelled makes the categories ordinary vocabulary rather than rhetorical flourish, and explains why Paul can list them without defining them.
Paul never says when or how this chain of command rebelled, and never maps “rulers,” “authorities,” or “cosmic powers” onto any specific figure named elsewhere in the canon. The org chart is real to him, but he leaves it completely unlabeled for anyone reading after the fact.
Lewis opened Screwtape by naming the two errors, disbelieving in devils and taking an excessive interest in them, then wrote a bureaucracy with ranks, reports and quotas. Treating the powers as organized without becoming lurid is exactly the discipline this index is trying to keep.
