Ezekiel 28:11-19

Ezekiel 28:11-19, in every translation this tool compares.

First, in plain English

The real question: is this really about Satan's fall from heaven, or a human king mocked with borrowed, older imagery? A political cartoon draws a stubborn official as a mule, ears and all. Nobody thinks he actually has hooves. The artist borrowed a shape everyone already recognizes to land one point. A writer aimed a poem at a real king the same way, dressing him in older, half-remembered imagery about a magnificent guardian's fall. The costume is the insult. This card reads the passage as borrowed cosmic imagery aimed at a human king, not Satan's biography.

The problem

The oracle is addressed to the king of Tyre and then describes him in Eden, on the mountain of God, as an anointed cherub. The description overshoots the addressee.

King James

the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.

That clause is the entire basis of the claim that Satan was heaven's worship leader. Older commentators reading the same King James took the tabrets and pipes as the court music of a Tyrian king at his coronation. Modern versions render the line as settings and mountings of jewelry, and the Hebrew word behind pipes appears nowhere else, which is why the verse is argued rather than settled.
What this reading resolves

A known cosmic rebel story used as the template for a taunt against a king explains both layers without making either one disappear.

What it still does not

It does not tell you the passage is about Satan, and the reading is regularly used to smuggle that conclusion back in. The index files it contested for that reason.

What the alternatives leave open

A strictly human reading has to account for Eden, the holy mountain and the cherub. A strictly satanic reading has to account for the fact that the oracle names a king and is written as a lament over him.

What this is not

Not a resume for Satan. The worship-leader claim has a traceable source, and it is a translation choice rather than anything in the Hebrew.
