Matthew 16:13-20
Caesarea Philippi, the gates of Hades, and the confession.
Matthew 16:13-20, in every translation this tool compares.
The real question: why does the writer bother naming the exact location for this exchange, and what does that location have to do with talk of “gates”? A story that specifies “he said it standing on the courthouse steps” wants you to notice the courthouse: the location is doing work the plain words alone don't do. This spot is named on purpose, right before Jesus starts talking about gates that will not hold. This card reads the location as deliberate: a real site tied to the underworld in local belief.
Matthew tells us where this happened, which he rarely bothers to do, and the saying that follows is about gates.
The location is doing work. Jesus asks at the foot of Hermon, in front of a cave locals treated as an entrance to the underworld, then names gates that will not hold.
Matthew does not comment on the setting, so the connection rests on geography and the reader's willingness to think the detail was deliberate.
