Echoes of Revelation
Revelation never quotes the Old Testament outright, yet no New Testament book refers to it more. See both texts side by side, why they don’t match, and what John does with them.
Revelation 13:16, a mark on the hand or forehead
The beast's mark on the right hand or forehead parodies God's command to bind his law on the hand and between the eyes.
Revelation 13:16, in every translation this tool compares.
A rival club that copies your team's jersey wants its fans to look loyal too. God told Israel to keep his law as a sign on the hand and a reminder on the forehead. Later Jews wore small boxes of Scripture there. John's second beast makes everyone take a mark on the right hand or the forehead. Beale and others read it as a dark copy of the sign of loyalty to God.
A sign of loyalty placed on the hand and the head. The Greek of Deuteronomy 6:8 and Exodus 13:9 has a sign on your hand, epi tes cheiros, the phrase John uses.
In the Torah the sign is God's law, kept in mind and practice. John's mark is the beast's name or number. The Greek of the Torah texts says before your eyes; John says forehead. In Ezekiel 9 a mark on the forehead saves the faithful; here the mark brings judgment.
Beale reads the mark as a travesty of the signs of belonging to God's people. The forehead stands for commitment, the hand for action. Those who bear the beast's mark give it full loyalty, as the 144,000 bear God's name in 14:1.
Not the Torah's sign copied. The hand and the forehead are borrowed, but the beast's mark carries its own name, not God's law.
Beale says God told Israel the Torah was to be a sign on the hand and a reminder on the forehead (Exodus 13:9, 16; Deuteronomy 6:8; 11:18), and calls the beast's mark a travesty of these signs. He contrasts the mark with the seal of 7:3 and the divine mark of Ezekiel 9, and cites Psalms of Solomon 15 for paired marks. He also weighs slave brands and the emperor's stamp on coins. The ESV Study Bible cites Deuteronomy 6:8 with Exodus 28:36-38 and Ezekiel 9:4; the NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible says the mark may parody phylacteries. The grade is drawn here as possible: hand and forehead are the only shared words.
Heiser says the key is bearing the name. Following Carmen Imes, he reads Numbers 6:27, where the priests put God's name on Israel, as the real background: the mark parodies bearing God's name. He grants Beale and McDonough's phylactery parallel as interesting, but thinks the blessing fits better. He reads the ban on buying and selling as persecution of those who will not deny Christ.
Beale, the ESV Study Bible and Heiser read the mark as a sign of allegiance, whether or not it is ever seen. MacArthur reads a mark that must be visible on the hand or forehead, like the brands Roman slaves and soldiers wore, and that people will need to buy food and goods. Keener and Beale cite 3 Maccabees 2:28-29, where a king branded Jews with the ivy leaf of Dionysus. The NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible mentions slave and soldier brands, and Aune, as Heiser reports, Roman coins. Heiser finds these Greek and Roman parallels weak, since they have no Old Testament context.
