Echoes of Revelation
Revelation never quotes the Old Testament outright, yet no New Testament book refers to it more. See both texts side by side, why they don’t match, and what John does with them.
Revelation 18:17-19, the sailors throw dust on their heads
The sea captains and sailors who stand far off, throw dust on their heads and cry, what city was like the great city, follow Ezekiel's lament of the sailors over Tyre.
Revelation 18:17-19, in every translation this tool compares.
When a great ship sinks, the crews of other ships stop to watch from a distance. Ezekiel pictured Tyre's oarsmen and pilots coming ashore and crying bitterly. They put earth on their heads and lamented: who was ever like Tyre? John's captains and sailors stand far off and watch the smoke rise. They pour dust over their heads and cry: what city was like the great city? In one hour the wealth that made them rich is gone.
Sailors who stand off, cry out, throw dust on their heads and ask who was like the city. The Greek of Ezekiel 27:29-30 has the rowers and captains standing on land. They cry bitterly and put earth on their heads. Ezekiel 27:32 asks who is like Tyre (tis hosper Tyros). Revelation 18:18-19 asks who is like the great city (tis homoia) and has them cast dust on their heads.
Ezekiel's sailors mourn Tyre, the port they worked from; John's mourn Babylon, the market that made them rich. Ezekiel's sailors spread ashes as a bed; John's simply weep. John adds the smoke of her burning and the refrain in one hour she was laid waste, where Ezekiel 26:19 has the city made desolate.
Beale says the sailors, like the merchants, weep for themselves: their trade is finished. Their question, who is like the great city, echoes the world's worship of the beast (13:4), the ESV Study Bible notes. Now it is a cry of loss. Beale adds that Tyre pictures economic idolatry in general, not sea trade alone.
Not Ezekiel's lament copied whole. John keeps the steps: standing off, crying out, dust on the head, and who is like the city. He drops the ashes and adds the smoke and the one hour.
Beale says the pattern of Ezekiel 27 continues: those who do Tyre's sea trade lament and throw dust on their heads because Tyre's end means the end of their living. He sets Ezekiel 27:28-33 beside 18:17b-19 and lists the shared steps: the pilots and sailors, standing on land, crying bitterly, casting dust on their heads, weeping and mourning, and asking who is like Tyre, whose wealth enriched the kings of the earth. Laid waste (eremothe) follows Ezekiel 26:19, I will make you a desolate city. Ezekiel 27:26-27 focuses more on the ruin of the sailors themselves. The ESV Study Bible says the cry, what city was like the great city, now mourns incomparable destruction (Ezekiel 27:32). The NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible and the NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible cite Ezekiel 27:30 for the dust, and the latter cites Ezekiel 26:19 for brought to ruin. The CSB Study Bible's cross-references give Ezekiel 27:30 and 27:32. The grade is drawn here: the scene follows Ezekiel step by step.
Beale reads Babylon as more than Rome, with Tyre standing for economic idolatry and Rome's sea trade in view. MacArthur reads ship captains mourning the loss of Babylon, the capital of the coming empire, and of the shipping trade that made them rich, and the one hour as a brief time of swift judgment.
