Echoes of Revelation

Revelation never quotes the Old Testament outright, yet no New Testament book refers to it more. See both texts side by side, why they don’t match, and what John does with them.

Revelation 2:23, he who searches minds and hearts

Jesus takes the Lord's words from Jeremiah 17:10, the one who searches the heart and repays by deeds, as his own.

Revelation 2:23

Revelation 2:23, in every translation this tool compares.

First, in plain English

An auditor who says I see the books, not the brochure, is claiming to know what is really there. In Jeremiah 17 the Lord says he searches the heart and tests the inner self, and repays each person by their ways. Jesus says the same of himself to Thyatira. The two claims stand together only in Jeremiah, Beale notes. Now they belong to Jesus.

What matches

Hearts and kidneys, an old way to name the inner self. And a payment to each one by what they have done. The Greek of Jeremiah 17:10 has kardias and nephrous with dounai hekasto kata, to give to each according to.

Why it doesn't match exactly

Jeremiah's Greek uses etazon and dokimazon, examining and testing; John has eraunon, searching. Jeremiah repays by ways and the fruit of deeds; John by works. The order of heart and kidneys is reversed. And the speaker is now Jesus, not the Lord of Israel.

What John does with it

What God claimed in Jeremiah, Jesus claims at Thyatira: he sees motives no one else can. Beale notes that Jeremiah's setting is idolatry for gain inside Israel, which fits a church tempted by guild feasts. The fiery eyes of 2:18 are explained here.

What this echo is not

Not an empty threat. In Jeremiah and here the point is judgment that fits the truth about each person.

Go deeper

Beale calls knowledge of kidneys and hearts a stock biblical idea for God's just judgment, and the formula I will give to each according to works a stock phrase too, but says Jeremiah 17:10 is uppermost because both expressions occur together only there. He notes that Jeremiah addresses Israelites who practice idolatry for economic gain (Jeremiah 17:3, 11; 11:10-17, 20). The vault's Septuagint confirms the wording. The NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible says the phrase recalls the Lord's self-description in Jeremiah 17:10. The CSB Study Bible's cross-references list Psalm 7:9, Jeremiah 11:20 and 17:10. The NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible names 1 Chronicles 28:9 and Psalm 7:9. The grade is drawn here: the pairing is unique to Jeremiah.

Where the sources disagree

The sources differ only on which verse is primary. Beale and the NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible point to Jeremiah 17:10. The NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible cites 1 Chronicles 28:9 and Psalm 7:9, and Keener speaks of Jewish names for God as the searcher of hearts.
