Echoes of Revelation

Revelation never quotes the Old Testament outright, yet no New Testament book refers to it more. See both texts side by side, why they don’t match, and what John does with them.

Revelation 20:2-3, the powers locked in the pit

The dragon seized, bound and shut in the abyss until a set time echoes Isaiah's day when the powers above and the kings below are herded into a pit and punished after many days.

Revelation 20:2-3

Revelation 20:2-3, in every translation this tool compares.

First, in plain English

A judge who orders a dangerous man held in custody until trial has not finished the case, only paused it. Isaiah 24 tells of a day when God punishes the rebel powers in the heavens and the kings on earth. They are rounded up like prisoners and shut in a pit. Only after many days are they punished. John sees an angel seize the dragon and lock him in the abyss. He stays there a thousand years before his end.

What matches

In both scenes a cosmic enemy is captured and held in a pit. He is kept there a long time before the last sentence. Beale reads Isaiah 27:1 as the sequel. Its Greek names the foe the dragon and the serpent. John gives him the same two names.

Why it doesn't match exactly

Isaiah speaks of a whole crowd: rebel powers above and rulers below. John names one prisoner, the dragon, Satan himself. Isaiah gives many days; John gives a thousand years. Isaiah has no angel with a key and a chain, and no sealing of the door. John also adds a short release before the end, which Isaiah does not mention. The sources give no reason for these changes.

What John does with it

Isaiah saw the powers above and the kings below rounded up, locked in a pit and sentenced after a long time. John follows the same order. Satan is seized and shut away, and his final sentence comes later, in 20:10. The sources differ on when the binding happens.

What this echo is not

Not a quotation of Isaiah. John borrows the order of Isaiah 24:21-22, capture, prison and a late sentence, with the dragon and serpent of Isaiah 27:1. Isaiah's prisoners are many; John's is one.

Go deeper

Beale says Isaiah 24:21-22 is the basis for Revelation 20:2-3 and finds its fulfillment there. The Hebrew of 24:22 reads ve'ussefu asefah asir al bor, gathered as prisoners in a pit, vesuggeru al masger, shut up in a prison, and umerov yamim yippakedu, after many days they will be punished. The Greek translation turns the pit into a fortress and a jail and the many days into many generations, but keeps a verb of locking (apokleiso) related to John's ekleisen, he shut. Beale ties in Isaiah 27:1, since the Hebrew for in that day the Lord will punish occurs only there and in 24:21; the Greek of 27:1 reads ton drakonta ophin, the dragon, the serpent, close to John's ton drakonta, ho ophis ho archaios. He also notes that Isaiah and Revelation 20 both have two stages of punishment for the evil powers. Later Jewish writings read Isaiah's host on high as evil angels. The NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible says the binding alludes to Isaiah 24:21-22 and 27:1, and Keener finds the interval of 20:5 suggested by the same passage. 1 Enoch 10 has angels binding the Watchers in a pit until judgment. The grade is drawn here: the pattern of capture, prison and delayed sentence is traceable to Isaiah.

Where the sources disagree

Beale holds the binding began at the cross and limits only Satan's power to rally the nations for the final war; Satan is not removed from the world. MacArthur reads it as future, after Christ returns: Satan and his demons are locked away for a literal thousand years while Christ reigns on earth. He argues that a number joined to years in Scripture always means real years. The ESV Study Bible sets out three readings: premillennial interpreters see a complete removal of Satan in a future age, while amillennial interpreters tie the binding to Jesus' first coming. The CSB Study Bible thinks the present-binding view has been weakened. Keener follows the order of the story as it stands and leaves the question open.
