Echoes of Revelation

Revelation never quotes the Old Testament outright, yet no New Testament book refers to it more. See both texts side by side, why they don’t match, and what John does with them.

Revelation 22:2, leaves for the healing of the nations

Ezekiel's fruit trees by the temple river become the tree of life from Eden, and leaves meant for healing are now for the healing of the nations.

Revelation 22:2

Revelation 22:2, in every translation this tool compares.

First, in plain English

A family recipe handed to the whole street is the same dish served to more people. Ezekiel saw fruit trees lining the river, bearing every month, with leaves that heal. John sees Eden's tree of life lining it. Then he adds what Ezekiel does not have. The leaves now heal the nations.

What matches

Trees on each bank, fruit every month, leaves for healing. All of that is Ezekiel 47:12. The tree of life (xylon zoes) is Genesis 2:9's name for the tree in the garden's center.

Why it doesn't match exactly

Ezekiel speaks of every kind of fruit tree; John names the tree of life from Genesis. Ezekiel's leaves simply heal; John's heal the nations. The Greek of Ezekiel uses a word for health (hygieia); John uses therapeia, healing. Beale reads the single tree as standing for many trees, since one tree cannot grow on both banks. Twelve crops, one each month, fits the book's twelves.

What John does with it

The tree Adam lost is open again, and now it serves the whole world. In Ezekiel the river renews Israel's land. In John the healing reaches people from every nation who belong to the Lamb. Beale reads the healing as the finished work of Christ's death, given once and for all, since there is no more sickness or death in the new creation (21:4).

What this echo is not

Not a medicine for ongoing illness. Beale says the healing does not go on forever, since there will be no more pain (21:4). It pictures a cure already complete.

Go deeper

Beale says the leaves for healing are based on Ezekiel 47:12, which is itself modeled on Eden's garden and river in Genesis 2:9-10, and that the tree of life shows John read Ezekiel's fruitful land as Eden restored (Genesis 3:22, 24). In his introduction he gives this verse as an example of universalization: leaves promised to Israel become leaves for the nations. The Hebrew of Ezekiel 47:12 ends vealehu litrufah, its leaf for healing. Some manuscripts of Revelation drop of the nations, which Beale thinks brings it closer to Ezekiel. Keener says John changes Ezekiel's trees to bring in the tree of life from Genesis, and that some Jewish writers counted twelve trees, a tree per month. The NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible notes the added of the nations; Wright calls this one of John's most moving reworkings. Beale gives no grade word here; the grade is drawn here: trees, river banks, monthly fruit and healing leaves could only come from Ezekiel 47:12.

Heiser's reading

Heiser does not reach 22:2 in a full reading. In other episodes he calls the healing of the nations the end point of the Deuteronomy 32 story: the nations are judged, then healed, in a new Eden. In the Revelation 19 lecture he begins the Bible's meal with God at the tree of life, in Eden, which he calls God's house. In the Revelation 12 lecture he floats a link with Israel's feast calendar, then says he cannot be sure of it.

Where the sources disagree

One tree or many? Beale and the NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible read the single tree as a kind of tree filling the city, after Ezekiel's many trees. The NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible thinks John means one tree on purpose, because eternal life has one source, Jesus. Beale also notes a reading of verse 2 with one tree standing between two branches of the river.
