Echoes of Revelation
Revelation never quotes the Old Testament outright, yet no New Testament book refers to it more. See both texts side by side, why they don’t match, and what John does with them.
Revelation 4:2, a throne in heaven with one seated on it
John sees God enthroned in heaven, the scene the prophets saw before him in Ezekiel 1, Isaiah 6 and Daniel 7.
Revelation 4:2, in every translation this tool compares.
When someone describes a palace hall, people who have been there fill in the rest. Caught up in the Spirit, John sees a throne set in heaven and someone sitting on it. The prophets had seen this before. Isaiah saw the Lord seated high in the temple. Ezekiel saw a throne above the creatures with a figure like a man on it. Daniel saw thrones set out and an ancient figure take his place.
A throne in heaven and God seated on it. Isaiah 6:1 in Greek has the Lord sitting (kathemenon) on a throne (thronou). Ezekiel 1:26 has the likeness of a throne with a figure above it. Daniel 7:9 has thrones set (etethesan) and the Ancient of Days seated. John has a throne set (ekeito) and one seated (kathemenos).
John names no one. He says only that someone sat on the throne, and he describes him by light and stone, not by shape. Ezekiel saw the form of a man; Daniel saw white clothing and white hair. Beale suggests that John's verb, was set, may echo Daniel's thrones being set in place.
The throne is the center of the vision: Beale counts it seventeen times in chapters 4 and 5. Everything in heaven is placed around it, and the judgments that follow come from it. For churches under pressure, the first sight in heaven is that God still rules.
Not a new picture of heaven. The NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible notes that God is enthroned in the earlier visions, and that John, like Ezekiel, gets there by the Spirit, not by a dangerous climb.
Beale says the Old Testament theophanies form the background, with Ezekiel 1 uppermost, since the phrases that follow refer to it clearly. Because Daniel 7 and Ezekiel 1 share the same order, the seated figure could echo either, but the plural thrones of 4:4 and the Danielic frame favor linking ekeito with Daniel 7:9a. He also hears Isaiah 6:1 and 1 Kings 22:19 in 4:2b, 8 and 9: like those prophets, John is summoned into the Lord's council. Keener lists Isaiah 6, Ezekiel 1, Exodus 24:9-11, 1 Kings 22:19 and Daniel 7:9-10 as the models for Jewish throne visions and contrasts John's restraint with later elaborations. The NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible's cross-references give the same set. In the Spirit recalls Ezekiel being lifted by the Spirit (Keener cites Ezekiel 11:1, 24; the NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible, Ezekiel 2:2 and 3:12). The grade is drawn here: the scene is unmistakable, but no single text supplies the wording.
Heiser says the throne and the one seated on it plainly match Daniel 7, Isaiah 6, Ezekiel 1 and 1 Kings 22. Reading Davis, he notes that all the major council scenes seat the head of the council on a throne, sometimes with members seated too, as Daniel 7's plural thrones show. Isaiah and Ezekiel set the throne inside the temple, he adds, because the temple is where God lives and rules.
Aune, as Beale reports, sees a parody of Roman imperial court ceremony in the scene, and Keener also allows a contrast with the imperial court. Beale grants some force to that background but ranks it well behind the Old Testament and Jewish sources.
