Echoes of Revelation
Revelation never quotes the Old Testament outright, yet no New Testament book refers to it more. See both texts side by side, why they don’t match, and what John does with them.
Revelation 5:6, seven horns
The Lamb's seven horns turn the horns of Daniel's beasts against them: the symbol of the enemy's power now marks the Messiah's.
Revelation 5:6, in every translation this tool compares.
When a winning team wears the badge of the side it beat, the insult is part of the victory. The Lamb has seven horns. In Daniel horns stand for kings and power, and they grow on the terrible fourth beast and on the ram. Beale says John borrows the beast's horns for the Lamb on purpose. The one who seemed defeated now carries the full power the enemy only pretended to have.
Horns that stand for power and kingship. Daniel 7:7 in Greek gives the fourth beast ten horns (kerata), and 7:24 says the horns are kings. Daniel 8:3 has a ram with horns, standing. Revelation 5:6 has the Lamb standing with seven horns (kerata hepta).
In Daniel the horns belong to the beasts that persecute God's people. John puts them on the Lamb. Daniel's beast has ten horns, then three are uprooted; John's Lamb has seven, the number of fullness. Beale notes the grammar too: the word having is masculine, though lamb is neuter, which may point back to the beast that had ten horns.
Beale calls it ironic parody. The Lamb defeats the enemy with the enemy's own imagery, so the punishment fits the crime. The beast of chapter 13 will later mimic the Lamb, with a wound healed and horns like a lamb. Revelation's war is between the true power and its imitation.
Not a picture of a real animal. Male lambs have two horns, the NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible notes, not seven. The horns are a sign of complete power, not a description.
Beale says the seven horns are probably linked to the beast's horns of Daniel 7. The Lamb replaces the son of man of Daniel 7:13, and one could even count seven horns left on the beast after three were uprooted (7:8). The same mimicry appears in 1 Enoch 90:9-13, 16, the Testament of Joseph 19:6-8 and Genesis Rabbah 99.2. He lists Daniel 7:7ff. in Revelation 5:6-7 among the ironic, retributive inversions of his introduction. Horns stand for power (Deuteronomy 33:17; 1 Kings 22:11; Psalm 89:17). The masculine echon may draw attention to eiche in the Greek of Daniel 7:7, the beast that had ten horns. Keener says horns as symbols of authority are rooted in Daniel 8; the NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible cites Daniel 7:7-24 and 8:3-22, the NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible Daniel 7:24 and 8:21-22, the CSB Study Bible Daniel 7:8, 20, 24, and the ESV Study Bible Psalm 18:2, Daniel 7:24 and Zechariah 1:18-21. The grade is Beale's probably.
Beale reads the horns as a deliberate parody of Daniel 7's beast. Keener roots them in Daniel 8, and the study Bibles read them simply as a sign of royal power, with no turn against the beast. The ESV Study Bible adds Psalm 18:2 and Zechariah 1:18-21.
