Judges 8:33

Judges 8:33, in every translation this tool compares.

First, in plain English

Lord of the covenant, worshipped at Shechem, the same town where Joshua had staged a covenant ceremony to Yahweh. Abimelech pays for his coup out of this temple's treasury.

What the text says

Lord of the covenant, worshipped at Shechem, the same city where Joshua staged a covenant ceremony. Abimelech's coup is paid for out of this temple's treasury (Judges 9:4). Judges 9:46 names a second temple in the city, of "El-berith," and DDD treats it as most likely the same god under a variant title, since the narrative never distinguishes the two, though some archaeologists have argued for two shrines, one of them possibly the altar structure excavated on Mount Ebal. Israel's covenant tradition at Sinai isn't thought to be modeled on the Shechem cult; the resemblance is one of function, not descent.
