Is It Actually in the Bible?

Phrases people quote as Scripture. The real verse, or the honest answer that there is not one.

"Confession is good for the soul" is a Bible verse

It's an old Scottish proverb, first recorded around 1641.

What is actually going on

The earliest known written form, "Ane open confessione is good for the soul," appears in a mid-17th-century Scottish proverb collection compiled by David Fergusson (published posthumously; the manuscript dates to around 1641). It's folk wisdom, not liturgy or Scripture, and its age and Scottish origin are well attested independent of any biblical claim.

The sentiment does overlap with real biblical teaching: James instructs the church to "confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed" (James 5:16). But the exact, quotable proverb people reach for isn't that verse's wording, and didn't originate from it. It's an old saying that happens to agree with a biblical idea, which is a different thing from being one.
