Is It Actually in the Bible?

Phrases people quote as Scripture. The real verse, or the honest answer that there is not one.

"Enlargement and deliverance shall arise to the Jews" means the Jewish people's territory will get bigger

"Enlargement" meant relief or freedom from confinement, not a bigger territory or size.

What is actually going on

In Esther 4:14, Mordecai tells Esther that if she stays silent, "then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place." "Enlargement" and "deliverance" are functioning as near-synonyms here, both about the Jews being rescued and set free from the threat of annihilation, not about acquiring more land. "Enlarge" comes from Latin "largus," abundant or generous, and originally meant to release someone from confinement; the phrase "at large," meaning free rather than imprisoned, preserves that older sense.

Modern English uses "enlarge" almost exclusively to mean "make bigger" (enlarge a photo, enlarge a house), which misses that Mordecai is talking about liberation from danger, not expansion.
