Is It Actually in the Bible?

Phrases people quote as Scripture. The real verse, or the honest answer that there is not one.

even him did outlandish women cause to sin: sounds like Solomon was led astray by bizarre, wildly weird women

In 1611, "outlandish" just meant "from another land" (foreign), not bizarre or weird.

KJV word, meaning shifted
Nehemiah 13:26

Nehemiah 13:26, in every translation this tool compares.

What is actually going on

Nehemiah 13:26 says Solomon sinned because "even him did outlandish women cause to sin." Read with today's ears, that sounds like the women were strange or eccentric. But "outlandish" is literally out-land-ish: belonging to an outside land, i.e., foreign. Nehemiah is talking about Solomon's non-Israelite wives who pulled him into idol worship (1 Kings 11), not women with odd behavior.

The drift makes sense: something "of another land" eventually became "weird by our standards," and by the 20th century "outlandish" had fully shifted to mean bizarre or outrageous, its original geographic sense gone.
