Is It Actually in the Bible?
Phrases people quote as Scripture. The real verse, or the honest answer that there is not one.
"Every one shall know his own sore and his own grief" (2 Chronicles 6:29) sounds like it's only talking about emotional grief, as in mourning a death.
"Grief" here means physical affliction or pain in general (sickness, plague, or hardship), not specifically the emotion of mourning a death.
2 Chronicles 6:29, in every translation this tool compares.
Paired with "sore" (a wound, plague, or disease), "grief" in Solomon's prayer covers any personal affliction or trouble a worshiper might bring before God, physical as well as emotional. The verse is about people who know their own struggles and suffering, whatever form it takes.
"Grief" and "grieve" in 1611 English still carried this broader sense of physical or general pain and burden (related to "grievous," meaning severe or heavy), before the word narrowed mostly toward the specific emotion of sorrow over loss or death.
