Is It Actually in the Bible?
Phrases people quote as Scripture. The real verse, or the honest answer that there is not one.
"God commendeth his love toward us" means God speaks well of, or compliments, his own love
"Commendeth" means demonstrates or proves, not praises or compliments.
Romans 5:8, in every translation this tool compares.
Romans 5:8 says, "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." The verse is describing an action, the cross itself as proof, not God talking about himself. "Commend" here carries its older sense of "put on display, give proof of," from Latin "commendare," to entrust or commit something to demonstrate its worth.
Modern "commend" almost always means to praise or speak favorably of someone ("I commend you for your effort"), which would make the verse sound like God is congratulating himself, rather than backing up a claim about his love with concrete action.
