Is It Actually in the Bible?

Phrases people quote as Scripture. The real verse, or the honest answer that there is not one.

"I wondered with great admiration" (Revelation 17:6) sounds like John was impressed by or approved of what he saw.

"Admiration" here meant sheer astonishment or amazement: John was horrified, not impressed.

What is actually going on

The Greek is a Hebraic doubling for emphasis, literally "I marveled with great marvel": total shock at seeing the woman drunk with the blood of the martyrs. It expresses revulsion and amazement, the opposite of admiration in the modern sense.

"Admiration" in 1611 still carried its Latin root sense of "wondering at" (admirari), without the positive connotation of esteem that the word has picked up since.
