Is It Actually in the Bible?

Phrases people quote as Scripture. The real verse, or the honest answer that there is not one.

"If any widow have children or nephews" (1 Timothy 5:4) sounds like Paul is talking about a woman's brother's or sister's sons.

"Nephews" in 1 Timothy 5:4 renders a Greek word for descendants in general (grandchildren), not a brother's or sister's son.

What is actually going on

The underlying Greek, ekgona, means those "sprung from" someone: descendants in a direct line, which in context means grandchildren caring for a widowed grandmother. It doesn't include nephews and nieces at all in the modern sense.

"Nephew" in 1611 English still carried its older, broader Latin sense (nepos) of a descendant of any generation, not specifically a sibling's child. English narrowed the word later, which is why almost every modern translation renders this verse "grandchildren."
