Is It Actually in the Bible?

Phrases people quote as Scripture. The real verse, or the honest answer that there is not one.

"Let the earth bring forth… cattle" means cows and bulls specifically

"Cattle" meant livestock or domesticated animals generally, not just bovines.

What is actually going on

Genesis 1:24-25 groups "cattle" together with "creeping thing" and "beast of the earth" as categories of land animals: "cattle" there covers tame, domesticated animals broadly (sheep, goats, camels, oxen, donkeys), not specifically cows. The word comes through Old French "chatel" and Latin "capitale," meaning property or capital; livestock was, quite literally, a family's movable wealth, which is also why "cattle" and "chattel" and "capital" are all the same word underneath.

English later narrowed "cattle" down to bovines exclusively, so modern readers picture herds of cows in a text that's actually describing domesticated animals as a whole category.
