Is It Actually in the Bible?

Phrases people quote as Scripture. The real verse, or the honest answer that there is not one.

"Let your moderation be known unto all men" means be careful to eat, drink, and spend in moderation

"Moderation" meant gentleness and reasonableness toward others, not dietary or financial restraint.

What is actually going on

Philippians 4:5 says, "Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand." Paul is talking about a relational quality (gentleness, forbearance, a willingness to give up your strict rights rather than insist on them), not about avoiding overindulgence in food or spending. Commentators describe it as "sweet reasonableness," a yielding, gracious posture toward other people.

Modern "moderation" is almost entirely about quantity (moderation in eating, drinking, screen time), so a reader misses that Paul is describing a way of treating people, not a rule about self-restraint in consumption.
