Is It Actually in the Bible?
Phrases people quote as Scripture. The real verse, or the honest answer that there is not one.
"No man shall fray them away" (Deuteronomy 28:26) sounds like a typo, or like it's talking about clothing fraying.
"Fray" here is an old verb meaning "frighten": no one will be left to scare off the birds and beasts from the corpses.
Deuteronomy 28:26, in every translation this tool compares.
This is part of a covenant curse describing utter desolation: with no one left alive, there'll be no one even to frighten scavenging birds and animals away from the dead. Modern translations render it plainly as "frighten away."
"Fray" as a verb meaning "frighten" is the same root that survives in "afraid," but the standalone verb itself has died out, surviving today mainly in the unrelated senses of a fabric "fraying" or a "fray" meaning a fight or brawl.
