Is It Actually in the Bible?
Phrases people quote as Scripture. The real verse, or the honest answer that there is not one.
Paul says he has "renounced the hidden things of dishonesty" (2 Corinthians 4:2), which sounds like he means he stopped lying.
"Dishonesty" here translates a Greek word for "shame": the disgraceful things people hide, not lying specifically.
2 Corinthians 4:2
2 Corinthians 4:2, in every translation this tool compares.
What is actually going on
The underlying Greek word is aischyne, which most commonly means shame or disgrace. Paul is saying he's renounced everything a person would need to hide out of shame (deceit, craftiness, distorting God's word), not narrowly confessing he used to tell lies.
"Dishonesty" in 1611 was broader than the modern narrowing to "lying" or "cheating"; it covered disgraceful conduct generally, closer to what we'd now call "shameful" behavior.
