Is It Actually in the Bible?

Phrases people quote as Scripture. The real verse, or the honest answer that there is not one.

"Seditions" listed among the works of the flesh means specifically plotting armed rebellion against the government

"Seditions" meant factious divisions in any group, not political revolt against a government.

What is actually going on

In Galatians 5:20, "seditions" sits between "strife" and "heresies" in Paul's list of works of the flesh, a list about relational and church sins, not politics. The Greek word behind it (dichostasiai) just means "standings-apart," i.e., factions and divisions, whether in a family, a church, or a community.

Modern English has narrowed "sedition" almost entirely to a legal, political sense, incitement against a government, the kind of thing prosecuted under a Sedition Act, so a reader assumes Paul is condemning political rebels, when he's really condemning people who split up any group they're part of.
