Is It Actually in the Bible?
Phrases people quote as Scripture. The real verse, or the honest answer that there is not one.
The Bible states the earth is about 6,000 years old
No verse gives the earth's age: the ~6,000-year figure comes from later genealogical math, not a direct statement.
The number is derived by adding up the ages and reign-lengths given across the Old Testament's genealogies: a real method, working from real numbers in the text, but an inference chain built by a reader, not a total the text ever states outright. Archbishop James Ussher's 1650 Annals of the Old Testament is the most famous attempt, dating the first day of creation to the night before October 23, 4004 BC.
Ussher wasn't alone, and the fact that he wasn't is the more interesting point: the Venerable Bede (8th century) calculated 3952 BC, the astronomer Johannes Kepler reached 3992 BC, the classical scholar Joseph Scaliger got 3949 BC, and Isaac Newton, working the same method with the same Hebrew text, landed near 4000 BC. Same genealogies, same basic arithmetic, four serious scholars working centuries apart, four different answers. That spread is itself the clearest evidence that this is a calculation performed on Scripture, not a figure Scripture supplies.
