Is It Actually in the Bible?
Phrases people quote as Scripture. The real verse, or the honest answer that there is not one.
The lion shall lie down with the lamb
Isaiah pairs the wolf with the lamb, not the lion.
Isaiah 11:6, in every translation this tool compares.
The actual verse: "The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them" (Isaiah 11:6, ESV-style rendering). The lion does appear in the verse, paired with the calf and the fattened calf, not the lamb, which is almost certainly how the two got mixed together in popular memory: the lion is genuinely present, the pairing is not.
The image belongs to a larger prophecy of a coming ruler on whom "the Spirit of the Lord shall rest" (Isaiah 11:2), where predator and prey losing their instinct to harm each other functions as a picture of the created order itself being un-broken. The wording is precise about which animals go together because the specific pairings (predator with its usual prey) are the whole point.
